Somewhere In The Suburbs

Winding Down, Gearing Up

Posted by: LSM on: January 13, 2008

As weekends here in Suburbia go, this one ranks pretty low on the activity scale.  I’ve had opportunities to catch up on my reading, watch a movie, and generally relax.  I’ll need to remember that during next week, when we are booked solid.

Adventure Guy left Friday to run the P. F. Chang’s Rock ‘n Roll Marathon in Phoenix, allowing him to mark off one more state in his quest to run a marathon in each one by the time he turns 50.  He’ll be back later tonight.

Saturday morning, Soccer Boy played his first basketball game.  He was so excited to get out on the court, and the team we were visiting did team introductions complete with spotlight and music.  It was a fun game, and his team came back from a slow start to win.  After the game, Dancer Girl had Odyssey of the Mind practice, and I ran by the grocery store to pick up a few things.

Saturday night I was scheduled to take a meal to a new mom from our Sunday school class.  This time I went with chicken pot pie, green salad with mandarin oranges, and vanilla bars.  Check out this post for the recipes.  As usual the vanilla bars were quite a hit.  Now I have to make sure I get the kids to eat the leftovers so that I can get them out of the house.  They are not conducive at all to staying on Weight Watchers!

Saturday night, it was “welcome to Suburbia, sleepover central.”  All three kids planned to have friends over.  I find it is much easier to book everyone for sleepovers the same night.  It cuts down on disagreements about who is going to be able to play with whom, and it keeps all the kids busy.  Unfortunately, Dancer Girl’s friend canceled at the last minute because she managed to get herself grounded.  It was late enough that Dancer Girl couldn’t find another friend to come over.  She managed to overcome this set back with a minimal complaining, which I appreciated.  We made tacos for everyone, and I put back enough for a nice taco salad for lunch tomorrow.  I also made a double recipe of the chicken pot pie, so I one of those in the freezer for later as well.

This morning, we went to church and Sunday school, and I’ve been casually getting the laundry done and catching up on a few other things around the house since.  As I mentioned, I’m enjoying this down time because next week activity-packed.  I have a school board meeting on Monday night; Soccer Boy has basketball practice, and the girls both have an orchestra concert on Tuesday night; Wednesday night I have a Junior League meeting; Thursday night Adventure Guy leaves for his annual bird hunting trip with friends, and next weekend we have both more basketball and an out-of-state gymnastics meet.  Fun times!

But for now, I’m going to enjoy the rest of my weekend.  I’m listening to a nice bit of classical music as Dancer Girl and two of her friends practice for their upcoming solo and ensemble contest, and when they’re finished, we’re planning to go out for dinner.

I don’t know what Dancer Girl’s friend did to warrant being grounded — but since Squib first mentioned it I’ve tried to not inadvertently punish other children if I have to punish one of mine. I’m sure it doesn’t always work though :}.

That’s my philosophy as well. I don’t know all the details of the situation either, since I didn’t speak to the mom. I’ll admit to being a bit annoyed by the last-minute decision, though.
